Kanha National Park lies in the Maikal ranges of the Satpuras in Madhya Pradesh, spanning Mandla and Balaghat districts. Its sal forests, open meadows and wetlands support Bengal tigers, hard-ground Barasingha, leopards, gaur and rich birdlife. The principal tourism zones of Kanha, Kisli, Mukki and Sarhi offer distinct landscapes within the wider reserve. From protected forests and sanctuaries to National Park status in 1955 and inclusion among the first nine Tiger Reserves under Project Tiger in 1973, Kanha has a long conservation history and remains especially renowned for the recovery of the hard-ground Barasingha.
